Cable Laying and Winching (non EUSR) - Face-to-Face
This course provides management and operatives with the essential training needed to install and lay cables in a safe and competent manner, assisting with preventing serious incidents and injury and protecting the built asset.
Description
Cable Laying and Winching has the potential to cause many serious incidents. These incidents can have several consequences, such as manual handling injuries (i.e. sprains, strains and hernias); entrapment & entanglement in the rope, winch bond or capstan; slips, trips and falls; crushing injuries from machinery and damage to equipment and materials.
Quinn’s Training Services have created a course tailored to the needs and requirements of cable laying teams. Aims & Objectives
On completion of this course, delegates will be able to:

Discuss Cable Laying incidents and near misses in industry

Describe a variety of cable installation methods and what equipment is needed in each case
-
Understand how to offload cable drums from lorries or trailers and how to move and position them safely using mechanical equipment

Understand the different kinds of drum jacks and spindles, cable trailers and methods needed to wind and unwind cable drums
-
Understand the different duct sizes and bending radii required for a variety of different cables
-
Describe the various safety rules for winches, including safe use of capstan winches & 4 ton winches the winch rope/bond and maintenance and movement of the winch

Describe the safe techniques and requirements for pulling cable by hand
-
Be able to safely complete the practical elements of the course including;

Installing a Shorting End Cap

Installing and removing a cable drum from a cable trailer
-
Set out a safe route and use of correct rollers and bellmouths

Safely operating a winch (various sizes dependant on course requirements) to perform a short cable pull.
Mode for Delivery
The course is delivered by one of our fully qualified tutors, who use a variety of theoretical and practical input, including group exercises, discussions, interactive powerpoint and practical demonstrations.
Examination: each candidate will complete a short, written exam at the end of the course, as well as a practical assessment where they must demonstrate skills learned on the course.

Prerequisites
There are no pre-course requirements for this course.
Onsite Delivery Requirements
A classroom environment with a table and chair for each delegate, power, a clear wall or screen for presenting and suitable welfare facilities. This course also requires a suitable amount of space needed to carry out practical demonstrations and assessments.
Equipment requirements (provided by the client):

SEB Winch or Capstan Winch and Drum trailer

2 vehicles with a suitable hitch point (I if not using portable winch)
-
Winch rope/winch bond
-
Cable drum with cable (approx. 20mtrs cable minimum)
-
Double eyed cable sock/stocking suitable for the cable supplied on drum
-
Shorting End Caps suitable for the cable supplied (1 per person)

Bellmouths x 1, corner rollers x 2 with pins, trench rollers x 6
-
spinner/swivel
-
Suitable hand tools for installing SECs i.e. hammer cable cutters etc.

Ratchet Straps to attach the Capstan Winch to the vehicle (if using)
-
Full PPE to be worn by delegates.
